The Bohemian Colony on Hydra
George Johnston and Charmian Clift were two Australian writers who gave up secure careers in journalism for the literary life on an exotic Greek island. They arrived on Hydra in 1955 and stayed for 9 years. They presided over a bohemian community of artists and writers which at different times included Sidney Nolan, Peter Finch, Sofia Loren, Allen Ginsberg, Tony Randal, Melina Mercouri, Tony Perkins and a young Leonard Cohen.
